Nashville Number System

The Nashville Number System is a method of transcribing music using numbers associated with the function of a chord within a given key.  The charting system was developed in Nashville, Tennessee in the late 1950s.

Nashville number charts are a mainstay of Music City Recording Sessions.  The musicians in Nashville use the charting system almost exclusively for communicating a song's arrangement and structure in the recording studio.  Anyone with ambitions of becoming a studio musician in Nashville needs to be able to read number charts.

Number charts can be played in any key.  If a song was originally intended to be performed in a specific key, the key can be switched without writing a new chart.  If letter or chord charts were used, a new chart would have to be created.  Number charts eliminate this issue completely.
